Land and seas

"God called the dry ground ‘land,’ and the gathered waters he called ‘seas.’ And God saw that it was good." (Genesis 1:10, NIV) In the beginning, God, according to His will, separated the land from the seas, establishing the order of creation and declaring all that He made to be good. The majestic landscapes of the Anishinaabe region draw the viewer’s attention to the contemporary issues of land decolonization, restoration, and healing. The fluidity and transparency of watercolor symbolize the process of creation and healing—gentle and delicate, like the living water flowing across the land. In contrast, the bold texture of oil pastels reflects the resilience and strength required for restoration. The interplay of blues and greens evokes peace and renewal, presenting a vision of a pristine world, untouched since the beginning of creation. The mirrored composition serves as a symbol of reflection and self-examination: faced with the wounds inflicted by history and power, we are called to respond. And how should we act? The answer is to seek the One who created the heavens and the earth.
